The U.S. threat of sanctions to stop the Arab genocide of non-Muslim blacks in Sudan (Rich Lowry, “Once Again: The Next Genocide,” June 25) has an important precedent.
Sixty years ago this week, the Germans, with the active collaboration of the Hungarian government, were deporting Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz--until the U.S. government’s War Refugee Board intervened. The WRB had been created by a reluctant President Roosevelt under strong pressure from Congress and Jewish activists. During the spring of 1944, the WRB carried out a campaign of psychological pressure aimed at the Hungarians, with threats of Allied retribution publicized via radio, in the European press, and in leaflets dropped over Hungary by Allied planes. The WRB also persuaded Pope Pius XII and the International Red Cross to appeal to Hungary, and it even managed to secure a public statement from FDR, who until then had almost never mentioned the plight of the Jews.
By early July, the pressure campaign convinced the Hungarians to halt the deportations. An estimated 440,000 Jews had already been sent to their doom; but more than 200,000 were spared. Earlier intervention would have saved many more. In Sudan today, as in Hungary sixty years ago, weeks mean lives.
